The gospel, honored; the gospel, rejected. On Friday we were looking at Acts 13, and finding two very different responses to the gospel, as proclaimed by Paul and Barnabas. When we come to Acts 13, there's a shift in the story. Really, it's hard to keep our footing in the book of Acts, so much is happening - including things that have never happened before! But when the gospel made it to Antioch it established a beachhead, and launched out. Cornelius was devout... but he was not saved. It must have taken courage for the Roman Centurion to abandon the numerous gods of his nation. He became devoted to the one true God. If anyone could have claimed righteousness by his own merits, it was Cornelius. But he needed to hear and respond to the good news of Jesus, like everyone else. It was a stretch for Peter to even enter his home, but what happened in that living room changed the world.

Preaching to Gentiles - is that even kosher?! The kosher dietary laws became a symbol for something much more important, in Acts 10. That's where Peter gets that vision of a sheet lowered from heaven, full of unclean animals. He learned that "clean" and "unclean" is a distinction that God can un-make. Does your Christianity have a cross? Saul of Tarsus was chosen to suffer. But we shouldn't think he was unique in that. Jesus said, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me." This is not a message that fills arenas with eager hearers. The Damascus Road is the road to devastation... and redemption. When Jesus stopped Saul in his tracks, the Lord could have said, "I'm done with you." Death will change your life! Maybe Paul wasn't actually dead when he got his glimpse of the next world: "in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows," he wrote.
