Forgiveness... and consequences! Yesterday we began to look at the paradox of God's free gift of salvation, and rewards for "good conduct." Rewards or losses, I should say. Today we'll take a look at what's at stake at the Judgment Seat of Christ. Our sins are forgiven, truly - with no asterisk. But that doesn't mean that overcomers and the overcome will get the same rewards.

What we do today, matters. If we know for sure that we are saved by grace through faith apart from our works, then we own a priceless truth. But the devil can still use that truth against us! He tries to persuade Christians that because their conduct can't save them, therefore God doesn't care what they do. It sounds silly when you say it out loud, but many believers have been snared in that half-baked theology. So today Jim will take us to the Judgment Seat of Christ.

Will you come before the King empty-handed? We've heard Christians say, "I don't want any rewards. Being with Jesus will be enough for me!" But will they still feel that way when others are bringing gifts to the Savior, and they have nothing? That's a question to get us started thinking about the "crowns" in Revelation, chapter 4. John's task is to describe the indescribable God! "No one has seen God at any time," John wrote. But... John saw something, just as Ezekiel had seen a Being on the throne. Both compared the emanations that struck their eyes to the look of brilliant gemstones. We said yesterday that Heaven is not a metaphor. Now, as we read further in Revelation 4, we're reduced to analogies in order to communicate anything about the Lord of Heaven.

Do you believe in Heaven? I mean, really? We've been lulled to sleep about the realities of Heaven and Hell. Today these doctrines are dismissed as relics of an unenlightened age. Who today could possibly believe in a "literal" Heaven, and a "literal" Hell? Well, the Apostle John believed. He was transported, somehow, to Heaven. Sometimes you have to show your ID... to yourself. "Remember who you are," the Apostle John seems to be saying to us as he begins his final message - the closing book of the Bible. "Think about what Jesus paid for you, and about your true position in Him, because some tough love is coming." Some of the churches were going off track already, even before the last Apostle had died.

"To Him who loves us, and..." "Jesus loves you" has become a trite phrase, partly because it's simple enough to be twisted by those who do not love you. "To Him who loves us, and has freed us from our sins by his blood," at least gets us started toward understanding divine love. That blood is the most precious element in the universe; it's the only thing that could "free us from our sins."

When God puts His cards on the table. If I were to say, "Turn in your Bible to the book of Apokalypsis," you might become concerned about my mental health. But that was John's title, in Greek, of the book we call, Revelation. The meaning is preserved in our translation; it's a word that refers to "disclosure" or "unveiling." Well, the unveiling of what? Of future events, certainly. But more importantly, of truths about the person of Jesus Christ

Jesus is the king of time, and the king of eternity! Jim has been showing us some "snapshots" of our Lord in the Revelation to John. What am I looking at, here? Sometimes we have to say to our kids, "That's a lovely picture - what is it?" We were guessing school bus, but the artist informs us it is a giraffe. Skilled painters can give us artworks that are intentionally ambiguous. But John saw a picture that portrayed two realities at once: Victim, and conqueror - lamb, and lion.
